IRTA


IRTA (the International Reciprocal Trade Organization) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting just and equitable standards of practice and operation within the modern trade and barter and alternative capital systems Industry. It works with an aim to raise the awareness and value of these processes to the entire Worldwide Community.

It is a global organization that promotes proper accountability rules, equitable standards, standards development and governmental relations, for the barter industry. The headquarters are based in Virginia in the USA. However, its members are situated Japan, China, Australia, Mexico, Canada, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Chili, Colombia, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, the U.S., Germany and the Netherlands.

According to their website, the IRTA mission is to provide to all Industry Members with an ethically based global organization dedicated to the advancement of Modern Trade and Barter and other alternative capital systems, through the use of education, self regulation, high standards and government relations.

Barter and local non-cash trade is a large industry. With over 500,000 businesses being involved there are approximately 2600 commercial and corporate barter companies serving all parts of the world. About 100 of these businesses have organized themselves under IRTA.

According to the figures available on irta.com Last year IRTA Member Companies using the “Modern Trade and Barter” process, made it possible for over 400,000 companies World Wide to utilize their Excess Business Capacities and underperforming assets, to earn an estimated $10 Billion dollars in previously lost and wasted revenues. These figures prove the important role that IRTA plays in the modern barter trade world.

The most significant achievement of IRTA has been that through its effort in the USA it has been able to get trade exchanges recognized by IRS, Internal Revenue Service as third party record keepers. IRTA was also responsible for a U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board ruling allowing unrestricted trade of air transportation – a landmark case.

David Wallach is the present President of IRTA. He was awarded the Legends of Barter Award in 2009. He played a central role in defeating California legislation that would have crippled the barter industry. He was also first to integrate media with commercial barter and created the IRTA Operation Outreach Program.

Ron Whitney is the IRTA Executive Director and UC Administrator. He also received The Legends of Barter Award in 2009. He has been an IRTA Executive Director since 2007.
